See Some of the Reasons People Come to Us

ANNUAL EXAM

If you have a vulva, breasts, or a uterus, an annual wellness visit is an important part of preventative health. Your visit will include a complete medical history, physical exam (genital exam only if clinically indicated), lab tests, screening for STDs and cancer, and information about birth control. An annual exam is recommended and an important part of taking care of your body to ensure you maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Urinary Tract Infection Testing and Treatment

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is caused when bacteria that live in the vagina, genital, and anal areas enter the urethra, travel to the bladder, and cause an infection. This can happen during sexual activity when bacteria from your partner’s genitals, anus, fingers, or sex toys get pushed into your urethra. UTIs can also be caused by chlamydia, gonorrhea, or other organisms. Most UTIs can be treated easily using antibiotics, and symptoms will go away within a day or two of taking medicine. If left untreated, these infections can spread to the kidneys and become very serious. It is important to get tested and treated as soon as you notice symptoms, such as:

  • Frequent and urgent need to pee.
  • Pain or burning when you pee.
  • Bad-smelling or cloudy urine.
  • Blood or pus in your urine.
  • Soreness, pressure, or cramps in your lower belly, back, or sides.

Yeast Infection Testing and Treatment

Yeast infections are very common. A vaginal yeast infection (also called candidiasis) happens when your vaginal chemistry gets thrown off balance. This can be caused by normal changes in hormone levels (such as during your menstrual cycle), antibiotics, cortisone, drugs, pregnancy, diabetes, a weak immune system, and a natural reaction to another person’s genital chemistry during sex. Yeast infections can happen on penises and scrotums too, causing redness and irritation, and on the mouth, throat, or tongue—called “thrush.”

Yeast infections are not sexually transmitted, but sex can lead to yeast infections. Yeast infections can be cured easily in a few days with over-the-counter antifungal creams or suppositories without a prescription, or a single pill that you swallow with a prescription. It is important to get tested and treated if you notice symptoms, such as:

  • Thick, white, clumpy vaginal discharge that usually doesn’t smell.
  • A creamy, whitish coating in and around your vagina.
  • Itching, burning, and/or redness in or around the vagina.
  • Painful sex.
  • Fissures or sores on your vagina or vulva.
  • Stinging when you pee.

Screening to Prevent Cervical Cancer

We offer screening tests to help you prevent cervical cancer or find it early.

PAP TEST

A Pap smear, also known as a Pap test is a cervical cancer test. The Pap test (or Pap smear) looks for cell changes on the cervix that might become cervical cancer if they are not treated appropriately. During the Pap test, your provider will use a plastic or metal instrument, called a speculum, to widen your vagina. This helps the doctor examine the vagina and the cervix, and collect a few cells and mucus from the cervix and the area around it. The cells are sent to a laboratory to see if they look normal.

For people with a cervix, a Pap test is recommended every three years from the age of 21 years. If you are over the age of 30 and have never had an abnormal Pap test, we are likely to recommend a Pap test every five years. Some people are at an increased risk and may need more frequent testing. Whether you are sexually active or not, it is advisable to get regular Pap tests based on your age. A Pap test is a simple, quick, and painless procedure.

COLPOSCOPY

A colposcopy is a cervical cancer test that we may recommend depending on the results of your Pap test. Using an instrument that looks kind of like binoculars on a stand with a bright light, your provider will take a close look at your cervix to check for abnormal cells, genital warts, and noncancerous growths (polyps). It is a simple, quick, and painless procedure.

HPV Vaccination

The most common STD, at least fifty percent of sexually active people will contract the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) at some point in their lives. There are many different types of HPV. Some types can cause health problems including genital warts and cancers (cervical, throat, rectal). But there are vaccines that can stop these health problems from happening.

You can get HPV by having vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone who has the virus. HPV can be passed even when an infected person has no signs or symptoms and you can develop symptoms years after you have sex with someone who is infected. This makes it hard to know when you first became infected.

HPV vaccination is recommended for everyone at age 11 or 12 years (or can start at age 9 years) and for everyone through the age of 45 years old, if not vaccinated already.

HealthQ offers the vaccination against HPV. Ask us if the vaccine is right for you.

Breast Cancer Screening

Breast cancer screening includes checking your breasts for cancer before there are any signs or symptoms of the disease. At HealthQ, we offer clinical breast exams. This is a simple physical examination where the provider uses their hands to feel for lumps or other abnormalities/changes in your breasts. We will also refer you for a mammogram if necessary. A mammogram is an x-ray of the breasts and is the most effective way to detect cancer early and when easiest to treat.
