Abortion on your own terms
If you’re considering abortion, there are a few things you should know.
First, during the first 11 weeks of pregnancy you have two options for how you can experience abortion. You can choose to have an Abortion Procedure In-Clinic, or a Medication Abortion At-“Home”. HealthQ offers both of these safe and effective methods, and we’re happy to help you determine the best option for you. Some people prefer an in-clinic abortion procedure because the abortion is over by the time they leave our medical office. Second, there are many resources to help people pay for abortions, especially here in MA with many insurance plans that include abortion coverage. The cost of an abortion can vary depending on a few factors including but not limited to how far along you are in your pregnancy, where you have your abortion, if you are awake or sedated for an abortion procedure, etc. At HealthQ, the discounted fee for self-pay clients is $650 for both procedure abortions and medication abortions. There are no hidden fees. We charge the same for both types so that your choice is based on your preferred experience, not cost.
Third, you have options about how you can experience an in-clinic abortion. Would you like to be awake or asleep for the procedure? Would you like to have a support person with you at your appointment? Would you like to be able to start a contraceptive (birth control) method the day of your abortion? At HealthQ, we offer nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) to help you relax during an abortion procedure. You can choose to use this or not. Nitrous oxide wears off immediately after the procedure, and you will be able to drive yourself home if you drive to your appointment alone. Nitrous oxide does not put you to sleep. HealthQ also allows you to bring a partner, friend, or family member to your appointment for company and support. They can be with you up until the time of the procedure and wait for you until you are ready to leave. If you’d like, you can also choose to have an IUD inserted or another method of birth control started/prescribed during your visit.

Minors and Parental Consent—The Lowdown
Massachusetts law requires minors ages 15 and younger to have consent (permission) to get an abortion. Consent can come from a parent, legal guardian, or judge.
From experience we know that many young people talk with their parents/guardians or other trusted adults in their lives about unexpected pregnancies and that they get support as they make decisions about how to move forward.
If parental/guardian consent is not an option, minors can apply for a judicial bypass. A judicial bypass is when a judge gives an order allowing a minor who meets certain criteria to have an abortion without having to tell anyone other than the judge. The judicial bypass process is completely free, confidential, and we’re happy to help walk you through the process.
Thanks to the incredible hard work of activists and politicians, minors ages 16 and 17 do not need consent for an abortion, with the passage of the ROE ACT passed on December 29, 2020.
PREGNANCY TESTING AND DATING
We offer a simple, fast, and effective urine pregnancy test with results in as little as five minutes. If you’d like to know how far along you are in a pregnancy, we can do a dating ultrasound to confirm how many weeks pregnant you are and your expected due date. Depending on the approximate duration of your pregnancy, we will recommend an abdominal or vaginal ultrasound. Both take 5-10 minutes and you will feel minimal discomfort, if any. MEDICATION ABORTION (“ABORTION PILL”)
Being at “home” for the abortion process. You can choose to have someone with you, or you can be alone. You won’t have shots, anesthesia, or instruments in your body. Some people say it feels more natural, like having a miscarriage. You can have your appointment for a medication abortion either in a clinic or via telehealth.
Abortion Procedure
Done in a medical office the procedure is over in a few minutes. It works 99% of the time and you know you are not pregnant when you leave the office. You see less bleeding than you would with a medication abortion. Medical staff members are with you during the abortion. It can be done later in a pregnancy than a medication abortion.
MEDICATION ABORTION (“ABORTION PILL”)
It takes 1-2 days to complete the abortion. Bleeding can be very heavy and may last longer than with an in-clinic abortion procedure. Cramps can be severe and may last longer than with an in-clinic abortion procedure. It cannot be done as late in pregnancy as an in-clinic abortion procedure. It cannot end a tubal or ectopic pregnancy. You’ll need to confirm that you are no longer pregnant when it is over.
