WHAT IS A NO-SCALPEL VASECTOMY?

A no-scalpel vasectomy is an effective and safe form of permanent birth control. This is a gentle, simple, minimally-invasive outpatient procedure to make a man (or person with a penis) sterile (incapable of producing a pregnancy). After the operation, sperm can no longer mix with semen. No-scalpel vasectomy does not affect sexual function or pleasure. Sex and masturbation should feel the same.

Although it may be possible to reverse a vasectomy, a vasectomy should be considered permanent sterilization.

A no-scalpel vasectomy is a quick, simple and low-risk procedure.

INITIAL CONSULTATION

We will schedule an initial consult by telehealth or in one of our medical offices to go over the procedure, rule out any contraindications, and obtain your informed consent.

PROCEDURE

When you come to our medical office for the procedure, expect to spend an hour for intake and paperwork although the procedure itself takes only about 30 minutes. The procedure is performed with a local anesthetic to numb the groin area. Your physician will find the vas deferens under the skin (the vas deferens are ducts that carry sperm from the testicles to the urethra, where it mixes with semen).

Once located, the ducts will be held in place just under the skin with a special clamp from outside the scrotum. A needlelike tool is used to make a tiny hole in the scrotum. The vas deferens are pulled through the hole, transected, sealed, and placed back into their normal position. This action prevents the flow of sperm into the seminal fluid, thus making the patient sperm free (in about 12 weeks).

RECOVERY

After the operation, your vasectomy doctor will prescribe you some over-the-counter pain medication. Usually, it’s acetaminophen (Tylenol). Your doctor will also provide instructions on how to take care of the scrotum during recovery.

Avoid intercourse and ejaculation for about a week after the procedure. Also refrain from heavy weightlifting, running, or other strenuous activities for at least a week. You may return to work and normal activities within 48 hours.

You will have to use a backup method of contraception until your follow-up visit and semen analysis

FOLLOW-UP VISIT

After 8-12 weeks we will ask you to bring in a semen sample. Our lab will analyse this to make sure that the procedure was effective and that it is safe to stop using a backup birth control method.

WHAT PATIENTS SAY

Every staff I came across in this office were kind, polite and professional. Great experience overall. Every medical office should be like this one, they hear you out and help. - R.V.

I went to this clinic multiple times back in December and cannot say enough good things about the staff. I have never felt more respected, heard and cared for in a medical setting. The level of communication was above and beyond so that I never felt confused or the medical decisions out of my hands - my opinion about my body mattered. They patiently listened to all my questions and answered in ways to make sure I actually understood. We connected on a personal level - rather than the superiority/aloofness some medical professionals have - which really makes all the difference. Highly recommend. Thank you for all that you do! - C.S.

Extremely safe, private, and a professional experience for such a sensitive time in one's life. - S.S.
